Art & Passion. Group Show in Berlin
Lisbon - February 4, 2016

What is art without passion? Passion is a primal emotion that connects human beings to nature, and the driving force that has propelled humans to invent the arts. Passion can embody many forms, material or abstract. Passion is not the middle ground, but runs the extreme gamut of either vibrant color or stoic minimalism. What unites the members of ART & PASSION are themes touching upon the evolution of humanity and its place in nature.

FELLINI Gallery presents a group exhibition ART & PASSION, an exhibition of new works by Aimef, Dongki Ha, Hideaki Ota, Paula Rosa, Masaki Umetsu, Rimi Yang, and Noortje Zijlstra. The sun and sea inspire Aimef's vision of beauty and day-dreaming. Dongki Ha’s sculptures represent how the Earth is a fruit from the tree of the universe. The black & white photographs of Hide capture a perfect moment of dramatic daily life where the past is captured in the present. Surreal digital manipulations by Paula Rosa centralize on the deconstructed human body, uniting it as housing for industrial structure that are embedded before skies of infinitely pluming smoke. Masaki Umetsu’s colorful light displays examine the nature of existence in its visible and invisible dimensions. Rimi Yang's colorful and nostalgic renditions of classic female archetypes transport the viewer to a distant land and time. Noortje Zijlstra simultaneously celebrates the dichotomy of beauty and tragedy of nature via the lost art of taxidermy.

My Planet I Love You. Group Show in Paris
Lisbon - April 6, 2015

- 11 décembre 2015 : vernissage et concert d’Olivier Griffith & the American Jazz Trio

AFTER DARWIN - TEATRO EXTREMO
Lisbon - February 8, 2014

To celebrate its 20 years, Teatro Extremo presents its 45th creation, "After Darwin", a new show from the Science cycle following "Einstein" and "Marie Curie", from a text by the award winning playwright Timberlake Wertenbaker, staged by Ana Nave and interpreted by Bibi Gomes, Fernando Jorge Lopes and Rui Cerveira, the cast of Teatro Extremo. The lighting design is by Celestino Verdades, conceptual and plastic design by Nave Ana and Rui Silvares and participation of Paula Rosa, who created multimedia work for the exhibition "Darwin's Evolution" held at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in 2009, translation by José Henrique Neto and photography by Victor Cid.

synopsis
In "After Darwin", two actors and a stage director, all unemployed, decide to venture in a common project: a show premiering on the scientific journey around the world performed by Charles Darwin, through which he researched means that supported his theory of evolution and provided a basis for the famous book Origin of Species, and his relationship with the commander of the ship "Beagle", Captain Robert FitzRoy. This expedition results in a stormy relationship between the puritan captain, a believer in the divine origin of man, and the young scientist chosen by him to illustrate the expedition who, through observing nature, interrogates its own certitudes. In parallel, the story slips into a collateral narrative situated among interpreters of the theatrical object itself that forces them to leave their roles and to question their participation in a project of this nature, taking into account the world we're all living in. A clash between two different ways of seeing the world.

" The exhibition takes visitors on a voyage through works hors-temps and hors-champ that extends beyond the frontiers of reality. These artistic mirages allow free interpretation to the viewer and take him into unknown lands and chimeras closer to the spirit of the artists. By sharing with us their inner realities, they give life to the invisible and make us discover the hidden and parallel worlds of their minds."

21st CENTURY PORTUGUESE SURREALISM - BERLIN, OCTOBER 10, 2013
Lisbon - October 5, 2013

"FELLINI Gallery is pleased tp present 21st Century Surrealism as explored by six Portuguese artists. Each artist approaches through their own process examples of surrealism that reflect on subconscious undercurrents of daily life.

The detailed paintings by Hélio Cunha gleam in a mysterious and magnetic way, attracting through the power of their object-ness a protrusion, as if wanting to be uncovered. João Carvalho's rich oil paintings bring to fore a sense of frozen time, instances often of silent memory, mysterious objects and deserted subjectivity. Isabel Meyrelles intimate sculptures inject a malleable playfulness into the impossible and allow simple disjunctures of objective meaning to indulge unlimited fantasy. Victor Lage's realistic graphite drawings of natural dream-like scenes seem both spiritual/otherworldly while at the same time holding to a documentary precision. In his intricate paintings, Santiago Ribeiro meticulously portrays the collective unconscious of crowds, where individuals remain as small elements of shifting universes, and cities are subjected to swayed perspectives. The black and white digital manipulations by Paula Rosa centralize on the deconstructed human body, uniting it as housing for industrial structures that are embedded before skies of infinitely pluming smoke.

21st Century Portuguese Surrealism is a group exhibition, initiated by the participating artists Santiago Ribeiro and Victor Lages and follows from the initial show International Surrealism Now, which took place in Coimbra, Portugal in 2010. Thereafter it has been presented in Conímbriga, Setúbal and Lisbon, as well as in Madrid and in Paris."

Monday to Friday: from 9am to 7pm until May 6, 2013.

The exhibition is an initiative by Santiago Ribeiro in partnership with Victor Lages. The show includes artworks by artists from 27 countries. Among them, the talented Daniel Hanequand, who recently passed away. He's one of Surrealism's leading names whose talent is something to truly admire.

Julie Oakes wrote in 2007: “ When Daniel Hanequand has thrown out the old and created a new sociological with the swagger of a true French revolutionist. He has upturned existing, stuck and rather boring functional ways and invented a different breed of humanoid and then placed the beings relationships and a context of his own making. When Paul Klee abstracted the figure, he turned from depiction, sorted the elements through cubism and then dove into the signification of abstraction and geometry. Hanequand distorts the figure from the inside to the outside so that the blur between the exterior and interior is more prominent. He is a 'curvist' rather than a cubist, softening the fractured space and creating a world view that is more akin to poetry than documentation. There is an abounding lyricism in his work - a lot of kissing going on. The figures seem entirely self absorbed and unthreatening, a little too bulbous to pose a serious opposition, their comings and goings relating to a sense of anti-gravitational play where speed is second nature, the result of uninhibited action. They are moving with internal combustion and the energy waves multiply within them, in ever changing and mutating swirls. They are ethereal, unconcerned with spatial definition but exchanging musculature, fluids and wind with each other. Twirling and cavorting on stages or in frames where their innocent coupling and orgiastic naïveté is exposed, they cavort with perfect guile, so preoccupied are they with their own imaginings. They have arrived, inhabited our consciousness and left an indelible imprint. The colors, monochromatic schematics or playground lightness enhance the dancing convolutions. There is a blending of body to body like the launch and receive of ballet. There is also a psychedelic inference, a peculiar pop memory of Sargent Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band and the 'blue meanies'. Hanequand conjures all that is fantastic from science fiction, with trends towards proboscises, feelers, anthropomorphism, and surrealistic truncations. They're miniatures, endearing strange little beings. This is a world under cover of unassuming smallness. It is completely self generating, falling in love, procreating and inspiring attention. Exquisitely rendered (many sharpened pencils) with an elliptical naturalism, the beings have taken over and left Daniel Hanequand slightly bewildered and bemused that they are so independently sure of themselves once weaned from his careful upbringing.”

You'll be missed, dear Daniel.

CONFRONTATIONS, DOROTHY'S GALLERY, PARIS
Lisbon - may, 19, 2012

Confrontations reflects the wish of the American Center for the Arts, Dorothy's gallery, to open up the genres and techniques in contemporary art. The exhibition space opens to a variety of different practices and sensibilities, creating some amazing conversations between genders and generations, between established artists and early career, between digital painting, photography and sculpture.

From Cyril Angelidis's Explosions of color to Aliska Lahusen's geometric meditation, through the photographic moment, the exhibition offers a journey, in pictures, in contrast and forms: contemporary photographs, portraits of legends of the 1960s, digigraphie, "Iphonography", photomontages, Polaroids and prints intersect to share their visions of a modern world by turns joyous, playful, electric, peaceful, meditative, or fantastic.

artists: Cyril Angelidis, Aliska Lahusen, Alain Quemper, Paula Rosa, Nathalie Seroux, Romain Darnaud, Aurélie Jouan.

HÉRITAGES SURRÉALISTES - EXHIBITION IN PARIS
Lisbon - april, 2, 2012

"The Dorothy's Gallery - American Center for the Arts varnished on Friday its new exhibition Surrealist Legacies with a program which marks the strength of the place: the personality of the gallery owner, Dorothy Polley, who sought to make art accessible both in terms of price and aesthetics. Open the doors of 27 Rue Keller, travel guaranteed.

The focus is New York, the proposal is cosmopolitan. The gallery that presented in 2008 an exhibition dedicated to Barack Obama and in 2009 a retrospective of works around Michael Jackson trend, is now opened to less American topics. Surprisingly, Surrealist Legacies presents only one American artist: Shahla Rosa. The idea is to transport the viewer into a journey making him travel to France, Portugal, the United States, Russia, Vietnam and Latvia. Organized by Dorothy's gallery in partnership with the Portuguese Foundation Bissaya Barreto, Santiago Ribeiro, Liba WS and Maria Fernanda Pinto, this exhibition reflects the desire of Dorothy Polley to promote exchanges between artists from all nations.

t must be noted that, in what concerns to the surrealist legacy, Portugal holds the upper hand with Dali inspired works by Artur Cruzeiro Seixas, who was a member in 1948 of the Portuguese Surrealist Group. Suddenly, we fell in love with the digital work of Paula Rosa, who transforms faces into post-bomb houses. Focousing on accessibility, the pieces are sold as Digigrahies, through a process that allows a reproduction of impeccable quality and in limited editions.

Until April 15, 18 artists, painters and photographers, will lead us into an oniric universe to finally make us wonder; when we look at the burtonnian characters of Serge Sunne, heads of strange animals in Victorian dresses, if this surrealism is at the basis of an ultra reality so much that make us completely drift into a daydream.»

NEW BOOK FEATURE: ALTERED IMAGES: NEW VISIONARIES IN 21st CENTURY PHOGRAPHY - Book Released: Late October.
Lisbon - september, 18th, 2011

They used to say that 'the camera never lies'. The next generation may find that difficult to believe. Photography has come full circle, from the 19th century obsession with realism, to the 21st century addiction to hyper-reality. Opportunities for artists have multiplied just as the problems have proliferated. As ever, theory runs to catch up with practice. The images collected here put strain on the old definitions and demand new ones. What are they? Well, they are not, strictly speaking photographs anymore. New territory needs new maps.

50 contributing photographers from 18 different countries. Book Released: Late October.

FEATURED IN THE VISIONARY ART YEARBOOK 2010 - 2011

In January 2009, Otto Rapp started a private network of Visionary Artists on the Ning Platform with a handful of friends. Since then, it has steadily grown and includes many well known Fantastic and Visionary artists. Many of these artists had been friends of Otto’s for decades, others are new to the fold. The yearbook, edited by Otto, is a celebration of the cooperative spirit of these artists and their accomplishments. There are over 400 pictures and illustrations on 160 pages, with essays by De Es Schwertberger, Sigrid Nepelius, Prof. Philip Rubinov-Jacobson, Helena Nelson-Reed and Delvin Solkinson, as well as numerous memorable quotes by our members. Three blank pages were added at the end of the book so people could collect signatures, if they happened to be attending an exhibition which included any of the published 201 artists.

IMAGINE THE IMAGINATION - Book is Available NOW at nEgoist.com

The book aims to show the variety of contemporary surreal art including almost 100 works in different media: traditional painting and drawing, digital painting, fractals, photomanipulation, photography, mixed media, sculpture, traditional prints, and more. The collection will be classified in 3 groups: Visions, Dreams and Nightmares, all this mental manifestation has been the source of inspiration for this revolutionary movement since the 1920s. The mind gates are open to explore the deepest of the subconscious in this visual dialogue with the “other”, in the omnipotence of dream, in the disinterested play of thought.
I am featured in this book (released on the 10 of February, 2010) in the category of mixed-media ,nightmares. Was certainly a great pleasure for me to collaborate with the nEgoist team. For more details and to order the book, please visit the nEgoist shop

A EVOLUÇÃO DE DARWIN (DARWIN'S EVOLUTION) soon in PORTO.
Lisbon - January, 9th, 2011

The University of Porto in collaboration with the CIBIO (Research Center for Biodiversity and Genetic Resources) inaugurates the February 1st, 2011 the exhibition "The Evolution of Darwin" at the Casa Andresen, the Botanical Garden of Porto.

The exhibition gives an insight to life and work of Charles Darwin, including his trip around the world aboard the HMS Beagle and the evidence that led him to postulate the revolutionary theory of evolution by natural selection. The Natural History Museum, University of Porto, the National Museum of Natural History, the American Museum of Natural History, the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid or the Musee de Histoire Naturelle de Paris are some of the contributors to an estate that has central focus of the collection donated by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. In order to highlight the scientific importance of Darwin and his contribution to the expansion of knowledge, evolution and biodiversity, the exhibition also includes an area for live animals in the greenhouses of the Botanic Garden, in collaboration with Zoo Santo Inácio. Going into two distinct environments, desert and tropical, visitors may observe a universe populated by turtles, meerkats, macaws, marmosets, among other animals with clear evidence of the mechanism of natural selection at work. Within the exhibition there will be an educational program to all schools and many other activities will take place, organized for audiences of all ages, which include workshops, lectures, music , drama and practical workshops.

February 1st - June 17th at the Casa Andresen, Botanical Garden, Porto

Open times:
all days (except for Mondays) from 10 am to to 7 pm

DARWIN'S EVOLUTION - Exhibition is now in Brussels.
Lisbon - April, 14th, 2010

Darwin's Evolution exhibition commemorates the 200 years since Darwin’s birth, and 150 years since the publication “On the Origin of Species”. Curated by Professor José Feijó (University of Lisbon/Gulbenkian Science Institute), the exhibition takes you through key scientific and cultural milestones that were to shape Darwin’s theory of evolution and natural selection. Using a selection of interactive media and original artefacts, the exhibition provides a condensed version of a long story, which is expected to help visitors understand the main motivation behind Darwin’s intellectual endeavours, and the consequences for modern culture.
My work is present at the show, hosted by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, and it consists of a few movies and some interactive stuff.

31 May – 4 June at the European Foundation Centre

Open times:
31 May: 13:30 to 19:00
1-3 June: 8:45 to 19:00

IN-DEFINITION - BY MANUEL CARMO - WATER MUSEUM - LISBON
Lisbon-July 3-2007

Manuel Carmo's installation show IN-DEFINITION has been an interesting project. The exhibition is integrated in the program of Portugal Presidency of the European Union and will opened to public today. Excecionally, during this show and for four consecutive days, visitors can visit the great water reservatory, totally empty for the effect. As Gillian Goya, the international curator for this exhibition, mentioned: "The timing of "In Definition" - The Corridor of Water in Life, by the renowed artist Manuel Carmo could not be more apt. At Mãe D'Água Museum he sends you on a theatrical trip from birth until death and has transformed the Museum into a Water Divinity, a mediation on human life - where we are going - where we would like to be. Manuel Carmo is full of conviction. He ignores the reminders of cultural specificity and does not fall into any category. It is impossible to disentangle the paintings/text/photography and design as they all blend into one, revealing the artist's gift for storytelling."

MANIFESTO 24 IN NEW YORK
Lisbon-March 9-2006

"I manifest that..." says Manuel Carmo about the creative Act. Manifesto 24 will be an amazing exhibition at the Orensanz Foundation for the Arts, New York. All this has by basis a Manifesto about art and the creative act. I'm still working on the project and I'm truly enjoying it, not only because it has been a great challenge but also because I admire Carmo's work. Finished the simulation project for the exhibition, now it has been time for all the graphic design involved: invitations, posters, depliants, etc. I'm currently working in the cover and graphics for the book "Manifesto 24" to be published in New York during this month. I also made some designs for the UNESCO conference about Arts Education that happened recently in Lisbon.
